Winter may be here, but you're likely already dreaming of a luxury vacation to a sunny destination – meaning it's time to start thinking about your beachwear. Whether you're planning a trip to Turks & Caicos or Riviera Maya, you'll definitely need a swimsuit. After all, when you're surrounded by breathtaking beaches, your bathing suit becomes the most important garment of your getaway. Before you go shopping, consider updating your wardrobe.
Here are some of the swimwear trends that are popping up for the 2014 resort season:
Crochet & macramé In keeping with the 1970s resurgence that seems to be going strong in fashion, both crochet & macramé swimsuits are having a major moment. From full-on crochet bikinis to swimsuits with subtler details like braided macramé neck straps & bottom ties, these suits have an interesting texture that makes them stand out on the sand. These fabrics also lend a boho vibe on the beach that fits in perfectly with any laid-back island atmosphere. Consider a monokini or a one-piece with a plunging neckline in the color of the season: white.
Neon What better way to stand out on a stunning beach than in a neon color? Swimsuits in shades of bright citron, electric violet, fuchsia, lime green & neon orange are perfect for beach basking or poolside lounging – & they accentuate that rich tan you're building. The best part about this trend is that you don't need to match. In fact, mixing & matching a two-piece bathing suit results in an eclectic take on the colorblock look that's truly unique.
Nautical There's some thing effortlessly chic about the classic nautical look, & lucky for us, it's one of the hottest looks for resort wear in 2014. Try a two-piece suit in traditional navy blue & white stripes, or go for a modern take on the trend with a one-piece in cherry red & cream stripes. Some designers are incorporating a retro pin-up feel with wide straps, high-waisted boy shorts & even tiny collars. Of course, metallic anchor embellishments, knotted rope accents & bow details are a must.
Cut-outs When you don't want to be brazen with an itty-bitty bikini, a one-piece with cutouts offers more coverage & is just as flirtatious. Try a criss-cross one-piece, which flaunts the upper part of your mid-section that's easiest to tone. A cutaway two-piece with a one-shouldered halter has a mod appeal that will definitely get you noticed, wherever you're vacationing. Don't forget coy keyhole cutouts, which are always chic on a bikini top.
