Visit the Conch Farm in Caicos

Updated: Nov 28, 2018

If you're taking family vacations to Caicos, consider some options for activities the younger ones might enjoy. For a unique experience, there's a certain farm you might want to visit. It's not your typical farm with cows, pigs & chickens though – this farm grows conches.

The Caicos Conch Farm offers 30-minute tours to any visitors wishing to see the unique process of growing these sea snails that often leave behind the beautiful conch shells found on beaches, according to the farm's official website. The guided visit includes a lesson on the sea creatures' biology & a look at the methods & technology used to breed the conches. Tourists can see the various stages of life for the Caribbean Queen Conch from its time as an egg to adulthood in the world's only conch farm.

For 30 years the Caicos Conch Farm on the island of Providenciales has provided an environment for conches & other fish on its 10 acre property, where all those steps of metamorphosis in the animals can be observed. Pens dedicated specifically to the hatching of eggs & post-larval maturation offer insight into the various periods of life.

While there are other things you can do on luxury travel, the Caicos Conch Farm offers a glimpse into the culture of the islands you're visiting. Conch meat has been a part of the delicacy on Caicos for more than 1,000 years, but over-fishing has reduced local populations to a commercially endangered level. With commercial breeding of these species, the Caicos Conch Farm hopes the lower demand will lead to an increase in the natural population.

It's not every day you get to see an underwater farm & any kids will be sure to love it. Take a visit of the Caicos Conch Farm & bring a shell back with you as a reminder of your trip.
